The Origins of LegacyMarker: How Brian’s Vision Shaped the Journey

LegacyMarker is redefining how we remember our loved ones, creating a digital legacythat makes sure their stories are never forgotten.

In an age where old photos and memories are at our fingertips, Brian Musgrave envisioned a way to ensure that the stories of loved ones who passed away could be shared and preserved. Not just for this generation, but for generations to come.
This vision was the foundation of LegacyMarker, a company that connects people to the past through the use of QR code memorials. It is a deeply personal mission rooted in Brian’s own experiences, where the loss of his father at a young age ignited a desire to preserve the legacies of those who might otherwise fade with time.

A Personal Beginning

Brian Musgrave grew up on a 100-year-old family farm in Atwood, Kansas, where family and legacy were core values. But at just 13 years old, his life changed forever when his father, Tom Musgrave, passed away unexpectedly due to a heart aneurysm. With only a handful of years to get to know his father, much of Brian’s knowledge of his father came from stories shared by relatives—most notably his aunt and his father’s college friend.

These stories were like snapshots of his father's life that Brian longed to understand better. But those who knew his father began to pass away, Brian realized that without a way to preserve these stories, his own children Dodger and Dakota might never get the chance to truly know the man his father was. This realization was the first seed that would grow into LegacyMarker.

Inspiration Strikes Again

Years later, while attending his wife Amber’s family reunion in Junction City, Kansas, Brian had another experience that would push him to take action. While walking through the cemetery with their then one-year-old son, Brian and Amber found themselves surrounded by worn, barely legible headstones. One in particular stood out, marking the grave of a Confederate soldier. Brian’s curiosity piqued—he wondered what the lives of these individuals had been like, beyond the names dates etched in stone.

As Brian looked over the rows of weathered headstones, he was struck by the absence of stories, with each life reduced to just a name and a pair of dates. With the older generation passing on, the stories behind those individuals were slipping away, and there would soon be no one left to tell them. It was at that moment that Brian realized something needed to be done to preserve these legacies, and he had the tools to make it happen.

Building a Digital Legacy

Thus, LegacyMarker was born—a service that offers friends and families the ability to share and save stories, anecdotes, photos, and videos about a deceased person’s life through an online profile. These profiles can be accessed through a QR code engraved on the headstone, allowing the legacy of the departed to live on in an interactive way. Rather than having only a name and two dates, these individuals’ lives can now be
explored by anyone who walks through the cemetery and scans the QR code on the gravestone.

The first person to be honored with a QR code gravestone through LegacyMarker was Brian’s own father, Tom Musgrave. On the 27th anniversary of his father’s passing, in March 2020, Brian dedicated the first Legacy Marker. It was a powerful moment, not just for Brian and his family, but for the larger mission that was unfolding. “I was only 13 when my dad passed away, leaving me with very few years to really know him as a person.” Brian shares, “Having his Legacy Marker profile where other people who knew him through all walks of life can post stories of him has allowed me to get to know him in a whole new way.”

The Mission of LegacyMarker

Brian’s goal with LegacyMarker is to build a bridge from the past to the future, using modern technology to resurrect legacies that risk being lost.
Every headstone with a QR code represents a life remembered, a story told, and a legacy preserved. In an increasingly digital world, LegacyMarker offers a way to preserve the rich tapestry of personal history—one that goes beyond faded stones and forgotten names. With each digital memorial, the past is brought to life, allowing families to cherish not only the dates but the stories, achievements, and unique characteristics that made their loved ones who they were. LegacyMarker's digital legacy service ensures that these stories live on, readily accessible to future generations with one simple click.

A Legacy for Future Generations

Brian’s hope is that the next time he visits a cemetery with his children, they’ll have more to explore beyond faded gravestones—they’ll be excited to learn about who these people were with the stories embedded in each profile. Through QR code memorials, photos, videos, and anecdotes can paint a vivid picture of the lives that shaped their own family lineage. The legacy of those who have passed will be more than just a faded memory; it will be a window into what their lives were like. Allowing future generations to learn, experience and treasure their ancestors. Brian Musgrave's personal journey of loss, remembrance, and determination has shaped the creation of a company that allows legacies to thrive long after we are gone, creating connections between the past and the future. LegacyMarker ensures that, through the power of digital memorials, no story is left untold.
