Biography
George Foreman was born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, and rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most formidable heavyweight boxers in history. Known for his incredible punching power, Foreman won the Olympic Gold Medal in boxing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics when he was just 19 years old. He captured the world heavyweight title in 1973 by defeating Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica, stopping him in less than two rounds and knocking him down six times. His rivalry with Muhammad Ali reached legendary status, most notably in the 1974 'Rumble in the Jungle' in Zaire, where he lost his title to the legendary Ali.
After experiencing what he described as a holy vision following a fight in 1977, Foreman retired from boxing at age 28 and became a preacher in Houston, Texas. However, his story was far from over. In an unprecedented comeback, he returned to boxing in 1987 and defied all expectations by reclaiming the world heavyweight title in 1994 at nearly 46 years old, defeating Michael Moorer in Las Vegas. This feat made him the oldest heavyweight champion in history, proving his oft-repeated mantra that 'age need not be a barrier.'
Beyond boxing, Foreman became a household name through his partnership with Salton, Inc. to promote the George Foreman Grill. His charismatic personality and comedic television commercials, often featuring his many sons, made him a staple in homes around the world. He remained connected to his Texas roots, maintaining a ranch in Marshall where he was known as a hometown hero and goodwill ambassador. George Foreman passed away on March 21, 2025, at age 76, leaving behind a legacy as both a boxing legend and a successful entrepreneur.
