Kurt Jeffery

Kurt Sherwood Jeffery was more than a teacher and coach—he was a mentor, a role model, and a beloved figure in the Yates Center community for over three decades. Born in Miami, Oklahoma, Kurt's journey took him through the small towns of Kansas as his father pursued his own career in education, instilling in Kurt a deep appreciation for learning and community. After earning his degrees and meeting his future wife Delana in Miami, Kurt settled in Yates Center where he would make his greatest impact. His 30-year tenure at the local school district saw him guide hundreds of young people through the challenges of athletics and academics. The trip he led to Russia with the Kansas All-Star Girls Basketball team in 1989 remained a treasured memory, a testament to his dedication to his players. But perhaps his greatest joy came in his later years, teaching his grandchildren to play golf and watching them grow. Kurt's influence extended far beyond the classroom and playing fields—he was a steady, positive presence in the lives of all who knew him. He passed peacefully on March 3, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by his wife Delana, their four children, 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. His legacy of mentorship, kindness, and love for the game will be remembered by former students, colleagues, friends, and family alike.
