Biography
Peter Edward Rose Sr., famously known as "Charlie Hustle," was born on April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rose became one of baseball's most celebrated players, spending 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, 19 of those with the Cincinnati Reds. He was a 17-time All-Star, won the 1963 Rookie of the Year award, and captured the 1973 National League MVP Award. Nicknamed for his relentless work ethic and heads-down playing style, Rose brought a blue-collar mentality to America's pastime that endeared him to fans across the country.
Rose's most legendary achievement came on September 11, 1985, when he broke Ty Cobb's 56-year-old record for most career hits, finishing with 4,256 hits. He also held MLB records for games played, plate appearances, and at-bats. As part of both the Cincinnati "Big Red Machine" and later the Philadelphia Phillies, Rose won three World Series championships. He transitioned to managing, becoming player-manager for the Reds in 1984 and serving solely as manager from 1987 until 1989.
Following his playing and managing career, Rose's legacy was overshadowed by his 1989 lifetime ban from baseball for gambling on games while he was manager of the Reds. After decades of denial, he finally admitted to gambling in his 2004 autobiography. Rose spent his later years living in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he died on September 30, 2024, at age 83, from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
